Heather Ferrell, AIA, NOMA, SEED

Heather is a designer, advocate, and educator who works at the intersection of architecture, education, and community to expand who gets to shape the built environment.

She is an architect and advocate dedicated to the power of design as a tool for social impact. Throughout her career, Heather has focused on Public Interest Design, collaborating with nonprofits and mission-driven clients to create spaces that serve and uplift communities—including multiple affordable housing developments in North Carolina.

In 2022, Heather founded Prism Design Lab, an arts education nonprofit that introduces young people—particularly those currently underrepresented in the profession—to architecture and design. Developed in collaboration with other architects, artists, educators, and community leaders, Prism is rooted in the belief that broadening access to design education strengthens both the profession and the built environment.

In addition to leading Prism as Executive Director, she is a member of the SEED Network, the Association for Community Design, and the National Organization of Minority Architects. She earned a BS in Anthropology from NC State University and a Master of Architecture from the University of Oregon, and is a licensed architect in North Carolina and Massachusetts.

"Heather is a fantastic architect and partner in the design and build process. She combines a visionary design sense with practical understanding of what makes a space maximally livable. I enjoyed working with her and am grateful for the home she helped us create."
